Fermenting veggies in ball jars can leave very little head space between whatever you have holding the veggies down in the juice and the bottom of the lid, in my case a plastic ball lid drilled at 9/16 inch to accommodate this little cork. the cork is then squeeeEEEEeeezed into that hole and need not stick the bottom of the bubbbler down into that precious little head space. The result is that you are less likely to get an over flow spoog making a big mess in your fermenting area - i like em...i'm here all week, try the veal..
