Fruit and grape pressing is difficult and inefficient unless the fruit is broken open, because berries in the middle of the mass of the fruit in the press resist being ruptured. The crushing operation can be performed by hand with small batches, but the job is much easier with a crusher, or a crusher destemmer if you plan to ferment on the skins.
