The Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA) is one of the oldest wine organizations located on the East Coast. Established in 1973 as the Vinifera Wine Growers Association (VWGA), it was an early supporter of planting world class Vinifera wine grapes, the production of quality commercial wines, and the building of a wine industry along the Eastern seaboard. Today, the ASWA is a national and international wine trade association that works with state and national legislatures to resolve issues that challenge the US wine industry.
The ASWA has conducted a wine competition for many years. In earlier years the competition centered on wines from only the state of Virginia until the organization realized that great wines were being made outside their state. In 2005 their focus changed to encompass the wines from the states on the Atlantic Seaboard and subsequently changed its name to reflect the more regional approach the organization was adopting.
In 2014 the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association completed its 8th annual wine competition. The competition covers the 17 states from Maine to Florida that border the Atlantic including Vermont, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The number of wineries in the 2014 wine competition was 96 with 495 wines submitted. Wineries from ten states on the Atlantic seaboard were represented in the competition: VT, RI, NJ, NY, PA, VA, NC, GA, MD and NH.
The competition is judged by a distinguished panel of judges from the Eastern Wine community with connections to the wine industry, wine press, and wine education fields. This year’s judges came from NY, RI, PA, NJ, MD, VA, NC and MO.
