The American Wine Society (AWS) Commercial Wine Competition is one of the oldest and most respected competitions in the United States and provides national recognition among both consumers and wine industry professionals. The AWS is dedicated to excellence in wine education for consumers and those seeking to be wine judges. Judges for the AWS Commercial Wine Competition include both AWS trained judges and professional experts from all aspects of the wine industry. AWS certified judges have completed a rigorous three level course over a minimum four year period of time. This intense curriculum includes a disciplined approach to wine fault identification, chemical analysis, winery operations, viticulture, wine history and appreciation and of course, extensive wine evaluation and rating.
As medals winners, wineries receive the following:
- National exposure among AWS members, consumers and wine industry personnel
- Press releases issued acknowledging award winning wines
- A portion of the entry fee is donated to the AWS Education Foundation which provides scholarships to graduate students conducting original research in enology and viticulture.
- Award winning wines are listed in the AWS Wine Journal Magazine distributed to wine enthusiasts throughout North American.
- Medal winning wines are showcased at a special tasting at each year’s national AWS Conference.
- Medal winners are posted on the American Wine Society website, providing national recognition.
